Oregon Banned License Plates

Oregon Banned License Plates

We guess that you are going to apply for a license plate in the State of Oregon. Have you just moved to Oregon, or have you bought a new car? In any case, it is nice that you will have your new license plate. But before that, we came to tell you about the laws in the state, as well as Oregon banned license plates.

What are license plates and why does the state reject them?

First of all, vanity plates (the same license plates) are personalized and vehicle plates. People make special combinations of letters and numbers and put them on the license plates. This way, they make their cars or other motor vehicles look unique.

Note that you can put almost any combination, whether it is a date or a name or initials, etc. However, some citizens may be surprised when the state rejects their license plate applications and bans specific combinations for license plates.

How does the state administer the usage of license plates?

Indeed, it is a good question to ask, especially when you understand that there is a huge number of possible combinations the citizens may apply for. In reality, just like California, the State of Oregon administers and manages the license plate applications via the Department of Motor Vehicles. Officially, the DMV is the body that keeps track of all license plates of the state.

Moreover, they do not only have a big database where they already keep rejected and unacceptable plates. They also have a committee that re-checks the applications, as the rules are strict, and some people keep trying to avoid them.

Why are there so many banned license plates in Oregon?

So, what are the main cases when the DMV may ban license plates, you may ask. In reality, there are some strict rules to follow.

  • Combinations that have sexual or intimate connotations, such as body parts, sexual functions, and excretion are unacceptable.
  • The offensive meaning will lead to a license plate ban, whether it is an offense with an ethnic or racist, or sexist meaning. Combinations must not offend any religion, a specific group of people, a nation, etc.
  • Anything that promotes or encourages illegal acts, violence, hatred is unacceptable.
  • Promoting drugs and alcohol will lead to a vanity plate ban as well.
  • In case there is a license plate with the same combination already,  you cannot apply for the same license plate.
  • If your license plate combination can lead to a misunderstanding for other people or the police, it will be banned.
